Introduction
If you have a day to spare in Sarajevo and a taste for adventure, the best thing you can do is head southwest. One hour by train or bus, the small town of Konjic sits at the entrance to the Neretva River gorge — home to some of the best whitewater rafting in Southeast Europe. This isn't a theme-park experience. This is 23 kilometers of emerald water cutting through limestone canyons, with certified guides, a riverside lunch, and mountain scenery that belongs in a documentary.
Here's exactly how to turn a day in Sarajevo into an unforgettable Neretva rafting experience.
Why Konjic Is the Perfect Sarajevo Day Trip
Most Sarajevo visitors head to Mostar for a day trip. That's fine — but if you've already seen the Stari Most, or if you want something more than sightseeing, Konjic offers a completely different kind of day. Instead of walking cobblestone streets, you're navigating Class II-III rapids through a canyon so deep the sun takes hours to reach the water.
Konjic is closer to Sarajevo than Mostar (60 km versus 130 km), cheaper to reach, and delivers an experience you'll be telling people about for years. The Neretva River at Konjic is so clean you can drink directly from it — a claim very few European rivers can make.
Your Day Trip Itinerary
Morning: Sarajevo to Konjic
Take the early morning train from Sarajevo main station. The 07:00 or 08:00 departure gets you to Konjic by 08:10 or 09:10, giving you time to meet your guides at the arranged meeting point. The train ride itself is worth the trip — the railway follows the Neretva upstream through tunnels and gorges, a dramatic overture to the day ahead.
Alternative: If you prefer flexibility, the bus from Ilidža departs every two to four hours and takes about an hour. Or rent a car — the 40-minute drive via M17 is straightforward.
Mid-Morning: Briefing and Gear Up
Upon arrival, your rafting team handles everything. You'll receive a safety briefing, wetsuit (water temperatures can be refreshing even in summer), helmet, life jacket, and paddle. Our guides have years of experience on the Neretva — they know every rapid, every calm stretch, and every hidden swimming spot.
Briefings are conducted in your language. No previous rafting experience is required.
Late Morning to Afternoon: The Neretva Experience
The full rafting route covers 23 kilometers through the Neretva gorge. This is where the day transforms from "nice outing" to "one of the best days of my trip."
What you'll experience: Class II-III rapids that are exciting enough to get your heart racing but safe for beginners. Canyon walls rising hundreds of meters on both sides. Water so clear you can see the riverbed in the calm sections. Stops for swimming in natural pools. The confluence with the Rakitnica River — where Europe's second-deepest canyon meets the Neretva.
The full route takes 4-5 hours, including breaks. Half-day options (2-3 hours) are also available if you're short on time.
Midday: Riverside Lunch
Most rafting packages include a traditional Bosnian lunch at a riverside stop. Expect grilled meats, fresh bread, seasonal salads, and strong Bosnian coffee — served on a riverbank with mountain views in every direction. This is not a tourist cafeteria. This is local hospitality at its most authentic.
Late Afternoon: Back to Konjic
After the rafting, your guides transport you back to Konjic town center. You'll have time to walk across the historic Old Bridge (Stara Ćuprija), grab a coffee at a riverside café, and soak in the atmosphere of this quiet mountain town before heading back to Sarajevo.
Evening: Return to Sarajevo
Afternoon trains and buses run back to Sarajevo regularly. The last train typically departs around 17:00–18:00, with buses running later into the evening. You'll be back in Sarajevo by dinnertime, sunburned and grinning.
What You Need to Know
Season: Rafting on the Neretva runs from May through September. June and July offer the best water conditions, while May and September are quieter with slightly higher water levels.
Difficulty: Class II-III rapids — suitable for beginners age 7 and up (children with parent/guardian). No experience needed. Our guides adapt the experience to your group's comfort level.
Price: Starting from €55 per person for the full-day experience. Includes all equipment, guides, transportation to/from the river, and lunch.
What to bring: Swimsuit to wear under the wetsuit, towel, sunscreen, water shoes or old sneakers (not flip-flops), and a waterproof camera or phone case if you want photos. Everything else is provided.
Fitness level: Moderate. You'll be paddling, but the river does most of the work. If you can sit in a boat and hold a paddle, you can do this.
Booking: Contact us at least 24 hours in advance, especially during peak season (July-August). We'll confirm your spot and provide meeting point details. WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach us.
Make It a Multi-Day Trip
If one day isn't enough — and many guests tell us it isn't — consider staying overnight in Konjic. Add a hiking day on Prenj Mountain, visit Tito's Bunker (ARK D-0), or try sailing on Jablaničko Lake. Our combination packages offer the best value for multi-day adventures.
